INGREDIENTS
Pašticada – slow-cooked beef in sauce
- 6 beef schnitzels
- tomato paste (from a tube)
- mustard
- 1 onion
- a little of white wine
- Vegeta (Croatian seasoning)
- 2 grated apples
- 6 dried plums

Domaći njoki – homemade gnocchi
- 1 kilogram potatoes
- 250–300 grams all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
- salt
- 2 eggs
METHOD
- The beef. Spread the schnitzels with a little mustard and brown them on both sides in a large pot with a little oil. Add the chopped onion and let it soften.
- The sauce. Stir in the tomato paste, then pour in the white wine and let it bubble for a minute. Add the grated apples and carrots, the dried plums, Vegeta and the water.
- Simmer. Cover and simmer gently for 1½–2 hours, until the meat is very tender and the sauce is thick and dark. Thicken with a little flour if needed.
- The gnocchi. Boil the potatoes in their skins, peel and mash them while warm, and let them cool a little. Add the butter, salt, eggs and enough flour to make a soft dough.
- Shape and cook. Roll the dough into long ropes, cut them into small pieces and cook in salted boiling water. They are ready when they float. Serve with the pašticada sauce.
