Youth exchange on food and the environment
The environment starts on your plate. Young people from five countries looked at the journey of food from field to table, the impact of what we eat, and the different diets and ideas behind them.
Why
Most food is no longer eaten where it is produced: an average meal travels more than 1,900 km before it reaches the table. Our food choices are shaped by a global production chain we rarely see.

What happened
- Cooking on a budget, with seasonal and local ingredients from the farm.
- “Past, present and future of food” and a world café on food and climate.
- A European Parliament simulation, where participants debated and voted on a carbon tax.
- Intercultural evenings, team building and daily reflection groups.
At the end of the exchange, participants worked in groups on short videos about food and sustainability, and presented them at a closing evening at the farm with guests from the area.
Results
- Average overall score: 8.7 out of 10 (22 responses).
“How easy it is to cook vegetarian/vegan.” (a Green Footprint participant, on what they found most interesting)
“Competence about applying more environmental friendly practices about food and other aspects in my life.” (a Green Footprint participant)
