The community

Comunità di Etica Vivente (Community of Living Ethics) is a spiritual intentional community founded in 1981 on the principles and values of psychosynthesis. It is a secular, cultural, non-profit association. The Community has always dedicated itself to the development of human
consciousness in the various fields of life, developing training courses on personal and group growth and development for adults and children, based on the great spiritual teachings of the 20th century and on long years of experience of group life. CEV is a full member of GEN (Global Ecovillage Network) since 215 and of Rive (Italian Network of Ecological Villages) since 2017.

The project

The 10-months ESC project “Permaculture, Regeneration and Living Ethics in Action” was designed for 2 enthusiastic young people who are interested in Mediterranean style horticulture, permaculture, olive trees care and spiritual community living. The project offers hands-on work experience as well as a thorough Permaculture/Regenerative Agriculture training course over the 10-month volunteering period. Other integral aspects of this opportunity involve moments of community-building, self-development and work in intercultural and intergenerational teams. During the 10 months volunteers will get to know the life of an Italian spiritual community and the surrounding Umbrian territory.

Activities

The volunteers will support the staff members and the Italian volunteers in the following tasks:

  • Bio-intensive horticulture
  • Community compost control and management
  • Care of the vegetable garden
  • Soil preparation
  • Sowing and planting
  • Weekly preparation and sale of vegetable boxes (CSA, Community Supported Agriculture)
  • Ordinary and extraordinary maintenance
  • Participation in the project “Adopt an olive tree & Regenerate the Earth” whole cycle, from pruning until harvesting.

Volunteers are expected to pitch in with a variety of tasks as they arise, mainly based around the upkeep and management of our bio-intensive vegetable garden, with our weekly veggie box scheme (CSA). They will also have the opportunity to participate in the just-launched pilot project called “Adopt an olive tree & Regenerate the Earth”.

Training in Permaculture and Regenerative Agriculture

Volunteers will attend a well structured theoretical and practical education program in Permaculture and Regenerative Agriculture, led by the team of trainers and designers, who have been collaborating with the Community for 2 years. Volunteers will have the possibility also to help to organize and participate in specific permaculture workshops during 4 weekends. Volunteers are expected to commit both to the theoretical and practical activities of the course.

The work coordinator will help volunteers to define and establish a work routine and calendar, and the mentoring team will aid the work towards personal development objectives.

Support:

Food and accommodation will be covered by the European Commission; volunteers will have health insurance, pocket money (5 euro per day) and an Italian language course. Volunteers will share a room in an eco-house located in the community, where privacy is guaranteed and where volunteers can cook their own meals. Travel expenses will be refunded up until a fixed amount  (180 € from 100 to 499 km distance, 275 € from 500 km to 1999 km, 360 € if more).

Volunteers will work 35 hours a week with two consecutive free days per week (not always Saturday and Sunday). These hours include 1 hour for a meeting with the work coordinator, that coaches the volunteers on their tasks, 1 hour for a meeting with the mentor, that evaluates the volunteers’ project, satisfaction and learning process, and the Italian language course.

Volunteers can walk to the nearby town, where they can find a grocery shop and public transport to reach other cities and attractions in Italy.

Volunteers will be asked to respect the life rules of the community, that include punctuality, no alcohol abuse and no drugs. Smoking is prohibited indoor and allowed outdoor only if it doesn’t bother other members of the community.
