Giardino Faunistico di Piano dell’Abatino is currently looking for 1 EVS French female volunteer that will support the staff members in their animal shelter for local and exotic animals.
The main activity of the shelter is the recovery of wild animals saved from vivisection labs, of animals injured by hunters or other human activities. The shelter has been providing refuge and animal care since 1980. At the moment it gives hospitality to about 400 animals, belonging to several species of mammalians, birds and reptiles. Among mammalians there are several monkeys species, deers, alpacas, lamas, racoons and lynxes. Among birds there are pelicans, parrots, cranes and several species of birds of prey. The shelter acts as a rescue and recovery center for local fauna. In this line, their main goal is to release those animals in the wild. The shelter is also specialized is exotic animals: they are a sanctuary for more than 100 primates from different species. Finally, Giardino Faunistico di Piano dell’Abatino is also a research centre about primate behaviour.
For the project “Rural Europe”, the volunteer will support the staff members in the following tasks:
- Preparation and delivery of food
- Observations of animals and recording of relevant information
- Cleaning animal areas
- Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs
Volunteers will live in a house 10 minutes walking from the shelter, on a wonderful hill covered by olive trees. They will share an apartment, cook together and live in an intercultural context.
Volunteers can walk to nearby villages, where they can find a grocery shop and public transport to reach other cities and attractions in Italy. They won’t need transport to reach their working place.
Food and accommodation, language course, health insurance and mentoring are covered by the Erasmus+ programme. Travel expenses will be refunded up until a certain budget fixed by the European Commission.
The volunteer will receive a monthly pocket money.
The candidates have to match the following criteria:
- Be available for the whole duration of the project
- Be 18-25 years old girls
- Have French nationality or have been living in France for 6 months or more
- Be interested in animal care
- Be interested in learning Italian
- Be ready to live in an intercultural context in a rural area, where the closest town with facilities is at 20 minutes on foot and by bus
- Speak basic English
